Project Background

The Lamwo region of Uganda was overrun by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency, which operated until approximately 2006. The LRA has been accused of multiple human rights violations, including the use of child soldiers. The region has suffered greatly and remains poor, with lasting displacement and a lack of development. According to the World Bank, only 41.3% of Uganda’s population has access to electricity and the current grid infrastructure powers only 33 of the 54 districts in Uganda.

Renewable energy developer Winch Energy is extending the benefits of solar energy to this region by equipping 25 villages with 40kWp off-grid solutions, also known as Remote Power Units (RPU).

Winch Energy is a global off-grid solar energy developer and operator, providing cost-effective renewable electricity, internet access and safe drinking water to the poorest off-grid communities.

These systems have been commissioned and are fully operational as of June 2022

Community profile

The Lamwo District, in Northern Uganda, has a nearly 54% poverty rate, and has been susceptible to conflict between neighboring ethnic groups. The series of mini-grids will provide 2,300 connections to households, SMEs, and public institutions.

Role of P-REC and project impacts

Revenue from the sale of P-RECs will support the procurement, installation, and operation of streetlights across the 25 villages in the Lamwo District.

This project is expected to contribute to the following SDGs:
