Project Background
Northern Nigeria is marred by conflict, kidnapping, banditry, and general insecurity. The situation is amplified by the lack of economic opportunities in the communities. Nationally, 57% of Nigeria has access to energy, with approximately 85 million people without access to grid connected electricity.

Nigerian renewable energy developer Prado Power aims to provide affordable clean-tech solutions that deliver electricity to off-grid, under-served communities and commercial/industrial clients. Prado Power is developing a series of off-grid solar systems across five sites in Niger State, in Northern Nigeria. Collectively, these systems will provide 540kWp of new solar energy to five communities, with nearly 41,000 people benefitting from having reliable energy access.

Community profile
Communities in this region are agrarian and composed of smallholder farmers, with rice, cassava and maize as the primary crops grown. Prado Power envisages electricity for productive use customers in the agricultural space, by powering agri-processing equipment, can create economic opportunities in the community.
Role of P-REC and project impacts
The revenue from the sale of P-RECs will go towards supporting the development of productive use equipment hubs across the five villages where the mini-grids are located. These villages include: Ishau, Amale, Aninigi, Maijaki, and Lafia-Kpada. In each of these communities, the equipment will be owned by women SMEs, with smallholder farmers benefiting from market access services.
