Bringing the PREC to Somalia

Last week we attended an exciting event in Mogadishu, co-hosted by the Government of Somalia and the United Nations, around the potential for renewable energy development in Somalia. One of the least electrified countries in the world, Somalia faces ongoing challenges from years of conflict and continued insecurity, compounded by the very real impacts of climate change. Yet Somalia also has a vibrant private sector, including in the energy sector, with growing plans and investment for wind and solar.

We had the opportunity to present on the Peace Renewable Energy Credit (PREC) and met an inspiring group of government, private sector and international actors working to help support renewable energy solutions in the country.

Journalist Laura Heaton provides an interesting perspective on this event, which happened in parallel to COP 23 in Bonn, and the larger opportunity for renewable energy in Somalia.
